Baccarat is a popular casino game. It is believed that this originated in Italy and from there it was brought to France where first it was introduced as a game. Baccarat was introduced in France during the reign of Charles VIII (1483-1498). It is believed that it is similar to the other games of that time like Faro and Basset. This is an Italian game so the name of the variants of this game is in Italian. Among all the three variants of this game Punto Banco is the only game which does not require any amount of skill, it is totally a luck dependent game. Whereas Baccarat Chemin de fer and Baccarat banque allows the players to make decisions so these games requires a significant amount of luck and skill as well. The card ranking for the game is as follows: All face cards and 10's have no value. Cards less than 10 are counted at face value. Aces are worth 1 point and Suits do not matter. Only the single digit values are valid. Any count that reaches double digit drops the left digit. For example 17 is counted as 7 and 27 is also counted as 7. Let’s take an example of a hand consisting of 1 and 2 it is worth 3 (1 + 2 = 3). A hand consisting of 3 and 7 is worth 0 (3 + 7 = 10 = 0). A hand consisting of 4 and 6 is worth zero, (4 + 6 = 10 = 0). If you get a 9 and a face card (9 + 10= 19 = 9) this is a natural nine. Two hands are dealt in Baccarat - The Banker's hand and the Player's hand. Before each deal, the player wagers on whether the Player's hand or the Banker's hand is closest to a total of 9. The player also has the option to wager on a tie or a draw . In this case both the banker's and player's hands total the same.Winning bets on banker or player are paid 1:1, but a commission of 5% is charged on bank bets making the net odds on such bets 0.95 to 1. Some casinos may charge a lower commission like 4 percent for example. Tie bets are paid 8:1, while there are others that pay 9:1, so this may vary from casino to casino. If there is a tie, bets on the banker or player are returned. Once a bet has been placed, there are no opportunities for further decisions -- both the banker hand and the player hand are dealt according to fixed rules, resulting in final hands of either two or three cards for each. The actual meaning of the word Baccarat is Zero. It is Italian and refers to the zero value of all the face cards and the 10's.
